CASENTINO 4 giorni / 3 notti
Castello di Poppi
it was mentioned by Vasari, and retains a very important heraldry Collection, which has been almost entirely preserved and the Rilliana Library, one of the most well-stocked in Tuscany, containing 25,000 volumes, among which there are famous manuscripts and incunabula.
Pieve di Romena
the Pieve dates back to 1152. It is situated near the castle bearing the same name, and it is one of the largest parish churches within the Casentino valley. Its interior is at the same time austere and evocative, and this allows us to take part in a recent and almost tangible past.
Castle of Romena:
residence of the Guidi Counts from 1008 to 1440. Dante lived here during his exile. It was here that the poet Gabriele D’annunzio wrote its “Alcyone”, the third book of “Le Laudi”.
Stia:
The bridge over the river Staggia gives access to the old town centre, set along Via Tanucci with the main square embellished by porticoes, the remains of mediaeval buildings and the reworked facade of the Romanesque Pieve dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta.
Castle of Porciano:
Just a few kilometres from Stia, a hillside road leads us to the eleventh-century castle of Porciano, one of the first residences of the Guidi Counts.
Pieve di Socana:
the church of Sant’Antonino in Socana is one of the most extraordinary examples of the continuity of worship: first the Etruscans, and later the Romans and the Christians chose it as a site of worship.
VAL di CHIANA 2 days / 1 night
Monte S. Savino
set on a hill overlooking the plain once inhabited by the Etruscans. The Middle Ages echoes through the architecture of the Cassero, with its imposing fourteenth-century tower from which we can enjoy a breathtaking view over the valley, and finally the parish church, dedicated to Saints Egidio and Savino, first built in the twelfth century.
Gargonza:
just a few kilometres along the road to Siena the fortified hamlet of Gargonza with its stone houses, renovated and transformed into flats and residences, have in no way altered the urban and architectural layout of the fortified nucleus.
Lucignano
At a height of 400 metres, the town dominates the valley below with its simple constructions of a mediaeval stamp and embellished by Sienese style Renaissance mansions. Outside the old town centre, the Medici Fortress, built for Cosimo I and never completed and all the surrounding countryside which provides a scenographic backdrop to the walled town.
